Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced their decision to separate this week after over 10 years of marriage. The couple share two children, Apple and Moses, and have numerous homes in desirable locales including London, Brentwood, Long Island, New York and most recently a beach home in Malibu.
In an interesting choice of words, Gwyneth asked for privacy and respect as she and Martin "consciously uncouple and co-parent." It remains to be seen how this couple's dissolution pans out as they begin the often lengthy, emotional and tedious task of dividing their vast wealth and collection of assets which is estimated to be in the range of $150 million. With each of them earning six and seven figure salaries in any given year it will be interesting to see what kind of child support and/or spousal support is set, if any.
Our goal as family law attorneys is to assist our clients in reaching amicable resolutions whenever possible and we hope this for Gwyneth, Chris and their family as well. Perhaps we should begin using "conscious uncoupling" as a new description for our services!
